Cradlepoint Releases Firmware 1.6.12 for MBR1200

CradlePoint Firmware 1.6.12 for MBR1200 Adds Support for New Devices and Bug Fixes

Firmware 1.6.12 allows you to use your U301 in an MBR1200!

CradlePoint has released Firmware Version 1.6.12 that provides the MBR1200 with official support for the new Sprint 3G/4G U301 modem, as well as support for other modems and long-awaited fixes for stability and bugs.

After last month's firmware updates for the PHS300/CTR500/MBR1000/MBR900, the MBR1200 was Cradlepoint's only 4G-capable router that was not compatible with Sprint's 3G/4G U301. With this firmware update, U301 users can now use their modem with the MBR1200, too!

In addition to adding support for the U301, firmware 1.6.12 also adds support for the following devices:

• "Make-before-Break"is a nice feature for dual-mode 3G/4G modem users - if you're connected to 3G and 4G becomes available, the router will connect to 4G before breaking the 3G connection

Franklin Wireless Unveils R526 Mobile Hotspot At CTIA

At CTIA Wireless 2010 in Las Vegas, Franklin Wireless unveiled their R526 mobile hotspot. Similar to the ultra popular Novatel MiFi 2200, the Franklin R526 also features an ethernet port for connecting devices that don't have WiFi connectivity. While its not as small as the MiFi at 2.46 ounces , the Franklin’s R526 is still a very portable device. It will support Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux without any special connection manager software, since you will be able to connect via WiFi or ethernet cable. Franklin indicates that it will be available in the US in April 2010, but we aren't 100% sure which carriers will be carrying this device. However; in the past Sprint has carried many Franklin devices such as the CDU680, U300, and U301. So it's likely that Sprint may be one of the carriers to offer the R526.

At 3Gstore.com we test a lot of products that could imrpove our customers experience with their existing cellular devices, such as antennas, amplifiers, and wireless repeaters. Each product that we review goes through an extensive testing proccess in which we determine exactly how the device works and how well it performs its task. We also test the device for different applications and environments so that we can be sure that it will function properly for all of our customers who may be using the device for different applications or at different locations with variable environments. That being said, we are very cautious about approving a device that we will recommend to our customers.

One of the latest products we've tested is called "5 Barz" from a company that we've never heard of before called "Cel Lynx". They actually gaurntee that their 5 Barz equipment will give your phone 5 bars of signal strength anywhere you go. Well we were very skeptical of this bold claim! How could this unit guarantee that you will get five bars anywhere you go? Even the most expensive antenna and amplifier equipment is unable to provide any signal in remote locations where there just isn't any cellular signal available.

After our testing, technically the product does give you five bars anywhere you go. HOWEVER; it's just an illusion! Here's how it actually works... there are two parts to this device, a receiver and wireless cradle. The receiver picks up the available cellular signal in the area, and then re-broadcasts the signal at a higher level using the cradle. Since its re-broadcasting the signal at a higher level, its able to fool the phone into thinking its getting a really good signal. In reality this "stronger" re-broadcasted signal is only as good as what the receiver is able to pick up, and with this product thats not much better than what your phone is able to pickup on its own.

When connecting the 5 Barz unit to our iPhone 3GS it went from 1 bar to 5 bars as advertised, but our connection speeds were identical. This proves that this device is still giving you the same signal that your already getting, but tricks your phone into thinking that its getting a stronger signal. This can cause a lot of issues too if your trying to troubleshoot issues with your phone, because you never would know what the true signal strength is when using this device. So our final verdict is that this product currently doesn't meet our standards in order for 3Gstore.com to sell and support the product.

Sprint Announces the 4G-Capable HTC EVO PDA

After months of speculation, Sprint has finally officially announced that they will be offering their first ever 4G-capable phone this summer, the HTC EVO!

The HTC EVO is Android-based and will include such features as 4G WiMAX capability (obviously), an 8.0MP camera, integrated HD video capture, the ability to use it as a wifi hotspot, and more.

One afternoon in January 2008, a coach bus with 50 occupants was involved in a major accident in Utah. The motorcoach careened off a 25-foot embankment, overturned, struck several rocks separating the roof from its body, and finally came to rest in a ditch on its wheels. Nine people were killed and 43 others suffered minor to serious injuries according to the National Transportation and Safety Board’s (NTSB) investigation of the incident (read more about the story here).

There was a witness that saw this unfortunate accident, but they had to travel about 35 minutes just to get a cell signal to call the local emergency team. The NTSB concluded that if someone had been able to make a call earlier, they might have been able to save some lives. As a result, the NTSB has begun recommending cell phone amplifiers for vehicles in rural areas, to ensure a lack of solid cell signal doesn't prevent future emergency calls from being made. They have teamed up with Wilson Electronics for the best equipment, and the Sheriff’s department has installed amplifiers in their vehicles that Sheriff Mike Lacy confirms have made a "significant difference" in their cellphone range - meaning they can make calls from places where they previously had no service.

Nexus One Coming To Sprint

Today Sprint announced that the Nexus One Is Coming To Sprint! Google's Nexus One has been available for T-Mobile since January, but since T-Mobile 3G coverage is very limited, it hasn't been extremely popular. Sprint will announce pricing and an exact availaiblity date soon. The Nexus One will be a great addition to the Sprint Network as Sprint has twice the network coverage of AT&T and ten times the network coverage of T-Mobile. New EVDO and HSPA modules to be showcased at the CTIA show in Las Vegas

IRVINE, Calif., March 17, 2010 — AnyDATA Corporation, a global leader in the design and manufacture of wireless communications devices, announces the DTW series (AnyDATA DTW600) of low cost embedded CDMA and GSM/HSPA modules designed for mobile Internet devices. The tiny broadband modules measure only 21mm x 22mm x 4.5mm, which is smaller in size than a quarter and weighs only 4 grams. The FCC Outlines Its National Broadband Plan

Many Americans, from large cities to rural areas, still do not have access to broadband internet, and the FCC is forming a plan to make high-speed internet available to more people. The full plan hasn't been released yet, but here are the details that we do from the preliminary reports this week:

• Currently only 65 percent of Americans have high speed internet access at home
• The plan is part of President Obama's 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act which flags $7.2 billion to internet related advancements
  
• The initial plan aims for each community in America to have at least one "ultra high speed" connection at a library, school, or military base.
• The FCC plans to move forward in creating an infrastructure that would allow 100 million American households to transfer 100Mbps   
• The overall goal is to provide 90 percent of Americans with high speed internet access by 2020.

FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said this about the plan: "the National Broadband Plan is a 21st century roadmap to spur economic growth and investment, create jobs, educate our children, protect our citizens, and engage in our democracy."  Some are critical of this plan, arguing that it will do far too little to decrease the overall costs to broadband customers that currently spending $30 - $60 monthly for their service, which is why some believe there is such a gap between the number of broadband haves and broadband have-nots (in addition, of course, to coverage/availability).  

On a list of countries that have the fastest internet, the US is currently ranked #14 with 3.9Mbps (South Korea is ranked #1 with 14.6Mbps, which is expected to be at 1 gigabit by 2012), and as previously mentioned, only 65% of Americans have high-speed internet. It's clear that something needs to be done to get the country up to speed, and we are very much looking forward to seeing the specifics of the plan as more details become available.

MiFi 4G / WiMax

A few weeks ago, Novatel Wireless successfully completed over the air testing of its new MiFi  Intelligent Mobile Hotspot prototype based on 4G-WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for  Microwave Access). Novatel's WiMAX implementation immediately achieved throughput of 18Mbps in over-the-air testing and can support theoretical peak throughput speeds exceeding 30Mbps downlink and 10Mbps uplink in a 10 MHz channel.  The current MiFi is based on 3G technologies.

Novatel Wireless has selected to use Beceem's high performance 4G-WiMAX chips.  This makes sense, since both CLEAR and Sprint use the same chips.   Sprint's first 3G/4G mobile hotspot was introduced January 2010, the Sierra Wireless OverDrive - which is a 3G/4G mobile hotspot, but this device has been plagued with problems since it's introduction.  Sierra has been working on them, but the OverDrive still has outstanding issues.

We expect to have a lot more info on this product after the CTIA 2010 show in Las Vegas.

FCC Introduces First Mobile App, Consumer Broadband Test,  and Broadband Dead Zone Report

Washington, D.C. –Today, the Federal Communications Commission launched new digital tools, the Consumer Broadband Test and the Broadband Dead Zone Report--that allow consumers  to test their broadband service and report areas where broadband is not available. 

The Consumer Broadband Test measures broadband quality indicators such as speed and latency, and reports that information to consumers and the FCC. The mobile version --the FCC’s first mobile app --is available through the Apple and Android app stores.  The fixed version is available at www.broadband.gov . Two popular broadband testing tools are used in this beta version --the Ookla, Inc. Speed Test and the Network Diagnostic Tool (NDT) running on the Measurement Lab (M-Lab) platform. In the future, the FCC anticipates making additional broadband testing applications available for consumer use.The Commission does not endorse any specific testing application.

Oops - Sprint Packages Wrong Charger With Blackberry Curve 8530

We just found out that some Sprint BlackBerry Curve 8530 devices are only packaged with the international AC charger, meaning it won't work in United States.  3gstore has checked our inventory and confirmed that all of our stock has the correct charger, but if you purchased your phone elsewhere or are planning to do so, make sure you check the charger before trying to use it! If you're not sure if the correct charger is included, try it in an outlet - you'll know right away if it is the right one or not.

If you purchased a Blackberry Curve 8530 from Sprint and it was packaged with the incorrect charger, they will replace it -  call them or visit the dealer that you purchased from for more details. Cradlepoint Firmware 1.6.9 for CTR500/MBR900/MBR1000 Adds Support

Sierra Wireless Overdrive Issues

Sprint has recently released the Sierra Wireless Overdrive (model W801), which is a 3G/4G Mobile hotspot; it's similar to the popular Novatel MiFi, but with both 3G and 4G capabilities (MiFi is 3G only).  With the rollout of 4G underway in the US, it makes sense to get a device that can handle the network of today (3G/EVDO) and the network of tomorrow (4G/WiMAX) - especially when signing a 2-year service contract - so the Overdrive has been extremely popular since it was launched.

Like so many customers who were instantly excited about the Overdrive, we really like the concept of the product, but unfortunately there have been numerous problems with it from the start. We are confident that Sierra Wireless and Sprint will work through the issues, and there has already been a firmware upgrade that resolved the Overdrive WiFi Problem. More updates will hopefully be on the way soon to fix the other problems users have experienced.

Not everyone is experiencing problems - many customers that are in a 3G only area are not experiencing any issues at all. Hopefully, by the time 4G rolls out in their area, the issues will have been resolved by Sierra Wireless and Sprint.

PHS300 for $99.99 Too Good to Be True - Don't Be Fooled!

Cradlepoint's battery-powered PHS300 router is one of the most popular routers for 3G and 4G users, but did you know that Cradlepoint has two versions for the PHS300 - and only one of them is 4G-compatible?

Lately we've noticed several online retailers advertising the PHS300 router for super-low prices, as low as $99.99. For a router with an MSRP of $179.99, that certainly sounds like a great deal... until you realize that these $99.99 PHS300's are the old 3G-only version!

The "Hardware Version 1" PHS300, which has been available since late 2007, is the original version and is only capable of working with 3g devices - even with firmware updates, a PHS300 with Version 1 hardware is not capable of supporting a 4G WiMAX connection and never will be. Version 2 has new hardware that allows it to support the new 4g WiMAX modems. 3gstore has been exclusively selling/shipping the Version 2 PHS300 since it became available last year, but other retailers are still selling the PHS300 with Version 1 hardware, which means it can't be used with the new 4g modems like the U300, U301 and CLEAR USB modems.

We urge customers to be wary of any deal that seems too good to be true... it probably is! Make sure you know exactly what you're buying - look closely at the specs, not just the price.

Playstation Network Down

Many of our readers use mobile broadband to play online games on gaming consoles such as the PS3 using 3G Routers which allow you to use mobile broadband aircards to connect multiple devices [like the PS3] simultaneously via WiFi or ethernet. Currently the Playstation Online network is down, so gamers are unable to play online using the Playstation Network. 3Gstore.com tech support received calls today from customers who thought there was an issue with their router, if you configured your PS3 following the EVDO Gaming Guide that is included with every Cradlepoint router from 3Gstore.com, then there is nothing to worry about. You will just need to wait until Sony has resolved the issue with their service. Sony made the following statement regarding the issue:

As you may be aware, some customers have been unable to connect to the PlayStation Network today. This problem affects the models other than the new slim PS3.

We believe we have identified that this problem is being caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in the system.

Errors include:

• The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.
• When the user tries to sign in to the PlayStation Network, the following
  message appears on the screen; “An error has occurred. You have been
  signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)”.
• When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears
  on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; “Failed to install
  trophies. Please exit your game.”
• When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via the
  Internet, the following message appears on the screen; “The current date
  and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)”
• Users are not able to play back certain rental video downloaded from the
  PlayStation Store before the expiration date.

We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.

As mentioned above, please be advised that the new slim PS3 is not affected with this error. We are doing our best to resolve the issue and do apologize for any inconvenience caused.
