According to Cisco's Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast mobile devices will outgrow the human population in 2012. At the current rate of growth there will be over 10 billion devices throughout the world by 2016. Smartphone data usage is also predicted to go up 78 percent over the next five years and should overtake laptop data usage by 2014.

The reason for the increase in data is primarily video use accounting for two-thirds of traffic, and study's predict 4G will be responsible for 36 percent of Internet traffic, up from 6 percent currently. In 2011 global network speeds grew to 315kbps, up from 189kbps in 2010 and the average smartphone network connection speed grew to 1344kbps, up from 968kbps in 2010.
