I haven't tried the booster in my truck yet, but I have had it powered by a 12 battery that is charge by solar panel- immediately my phone signal jumped from 2 bars to the full five. How neat-o is that!? Used my phone "hot spot" too. Phone must be in the cradle for full boost. Fully satisfied with the Sleek Booster.

Making the "Right" Sales

Whenever we train a new employee at 3Gstore, one of the first things we teach them is that our primary goal is NOT to "make a sale," it's to sell the customer the RIGHT products - or don't sell them anything at all.

This often surprises new employees, especially if they come from a more traditional retail background where sell-sell-sell is the motto. Our philosophy is definitely different, but in our opinion it makes a lot more sense. By investing some time with the customer to determine what their needs are and what they're trying to accomplish, we can make a more accurate assessment of which products will help them. This customer service strategy helps ensure that customers don't have to deal with the disappointment of something not working the way they had hoped or the hassle and wasted expense of buying something that isn't appropriate for their needs or is incompatible with their existing equipment.

There are a number of things we do in our effort to guide customers to the right products:
  • Pre-sales support: our experienced staff is available via phone, online chat, and email and can answer virtually any question about our equipment, how it will work with your existing gear, what you can expect from it, etc. It sounds like a no-brainer, but a lot of retailers aren't actually all that well-versed in the equipment they sell or the technology surrounding it (just try to ask a Verizon rep about using a router with one of their mobile broadband modems - yikes!). Customers are often surprised by our level of knowledge - I think I hear some variation of "wow, you really know what you're talking about!" just about every day!
  • Online resources: no one wants to waste money on something that isn't going to work for them, and the best way to avoid that is to do some quick homework before buying. We provide lots of helpful tools for customers to use before making a purchase. If you're thinking about signing up for Verizon 4G service, for example, it's a good idea to check the coverage maps first so you can get an idea of whether the coverage is going to be good where you need the service. If you're considering buying an antenna or amplifier to boost your signal, we recommend doing some testing at the location so you can make sure the antenna/amplifier is actually going to improve your signal and performance. Customers looking for a router for their 3G or 4G device should check the compatibility charts so they can make sure their device is compatible with the router they're interested in; we also have a router advisor tool that allows you to narrow your search based on certain features you need.

  • Just say no: sometimes, we don't have anything that will help a customer. In these instances, we are always honest with the customer - we would much rather not make a sale than have a customer buy an antenna when it's not going to help their internet speeds, or have to return a router because it didn't have the feature they wanted. If the problem is that the customer's expectations are simply not realistic (for example, customers hoping to acquire 4G signal from a tower 40 miles away), we'll explain why; if something exists that would be suitable but we don't carry it, we'll make a recommendation if we can.
While it may seem strange compared to other stores, our sales philosophy is one of the many things customers love about 3Gstore. Verizon Share Everything is Live

Earlier this month Verizon announced their new pooled Share Everything data plans designed to benefit families. Despite some criticism from customers unhappy about the new plans Verizon has went live with the new service. Depending on the device you want to bring to Verizon you’ll have a flat fee ranging from $10 to $40 and an additional $50 to $100 a month for data service. If you exceed your monthly data allotment you’ll be facing a $15 overage fee so you better choose the correct plan for your family. International Travel: Pay for Plan or Free WiFi?

While travelling in Europe recently with my shiny new iPhone 4S and its GSM capabilities, I was faced with the choice of relying on WiFi connections as I could find them, or adding my carrier’s international plan for voice and/or data.  Now that WiFi hotspots are widely available, and usually free, it seems like an obvious choice instead of paying (sometimes a lot) for international service.

Through WiFi, I would still be able to check emails, surf the web, and even communicate with people back home through Skype or FaceTime (plus all my cool new apps).  All the hotels I booked offered free WiFi, and it was safe to assume I’d easily be able to find other hotspots while out and about in the cities I was visiting.  I could also have solved some potential issues by taking along the highly portable
Pepwave Surf Mini.  As a wireless bridge, it would allow me to connect to distant hotspots and surf more securely by creating a private network rather than using the open or unsecured connections offered by the hotels and cafes.

So why did I choose to pay for the international voice plan anyway?  Given my travel needs, it was a peace of mind issue.  The trip was for a meeting that required some last minute coordination.  There was also a potential medical situation back home that I wanted to be reachable for in case of an emergency.  Yes, I could rely on WiFi fairly easily, but I also wanted to enjoy my travels without constantly thinking about the next hotspot to check what I may have missed.

The small fee to temporarily add the plan, and the per-message and per-call rates were entirely worth that peace of mind.  I let people know I would be checking email a few times a day, but not to call or text unless it was an emergency (though I did offer to let them pay my bill if they just couldn’t resist!).  I was able to call home for Father’s Day while enjoying a gorgeous view out on the town.  The calls were amazingly clear with very little latency, and I had great coverage everywhere I went.  I was also able to receive the text that my friend’s long-awaited baby had finally arrived!


Yes, I could have accomplished it all (for free) via WiFi and apps, but knowing I wasn’t tied to finding hotspots allowed me to focus on the next big adventure instead of what I might be missing while between connections.  The unexpected bonus of having voice-only coverage and relying on WiFi for data is that I had time to think about what would make the biggest impact on just how cool my adventure was for my daily updates!
