Using a SmartPhone for site surveys!

If you have called about an antenna or amplifier chances are that you have had us ask you about a site survey.   The directions instruct you to move your laptop around and get signal readings inside and outside your home/office.  If you have an iPhone or Android phone, these directions will make it much easier to do the site survey.   Keep in mind that you will only be testing the carrier (AT&T, Sprint, Verizon) that your SmartPhone gets service.

For iPhone you have to put the phone in field test mode. This consists of just entering some numbers into the phone application. Open the phone app and enter *3001#12345#* and then press call that will put the phone into field test mode then you will notice a negative number in the upper left hand corner that is the rssi and that is the number you need to do a site survey.  A -60 indicates that you are right under a cell tower, a -115 indicates that you are out of a service area,

For androids it is a little more complicated not that much. So all you have to do is go into settings then about phone (which is usually at the bottom) then there should be another option to click on that will say either status or network, if you click on that then you will see your provider and signal strength in a negative number that is the rssi.

If you look at the picture above, the Verizon iPhone has a reading of -99 and the Sprint Android has a reading of -xx.

There you go, now you can use your SmartPhone to help you shop for the right antenna or amplifier.
