AT&T gets approval of Alltel purchase with conditions

According to Fierce Wireless AT&T Mobility’s $780 million purchase of Atlantic Tele-Network was approved on Friday. The company had been operating under the Alltel brand and the agency said this could cause some competitive and public interest harms in several markets, but AT&T received approval because of a number of conditions. One of the biggest stipulations is AT&T will need to maintain Alltel’s CDMA network through June 2015 so customers won’t be forced to upgrade to newer handsets today. In addition to continuing CDMA coverage AT&T has also agreed to cover 100 percent of the population currently covered with Alltel with their own 4G HSPA network. If customers want to move from an older Alltel phone AT&T will also replace their phone with a comparable AT&T model for free.
