The signal booster brought up our data signal from almost unusable to moderately good. We are very happy with it. It is a good solution since we don't have a very good Verizon signal where we are.

Sony Playstation Network Still Down Due to Hackers

If you haven’t already heard, or been experiencing it yourself, Sony’s PlayStation Network is still down as of a few minutes ago. Their engineering team continues to deal with the aftermath of a hacking group called “Lizard Squad”, who also crashed Microsoft’s Xbox Live at the same time. Microsoft has gotten Xbox Live back up already and given the events of the 2011 PlayStation network hack, it’s a surprise that Sony is still down. At least this time no user account information seems to have been leaked due to the attack.

Neither Microsoft, nor Sony has provided an explanation for the network disruptions. It has been linked to a high-profile breach at Sony Pictures due to North Korea’s opposition to the film “The Interview.” However, other than the fact that the FBI has identified North Korea to be the culprit, there has been no direct correlation to the film.

The attacks originated on Christmas Day - an even bigger surprise to those who received new consoles as gifts. Users typically have to update their consoles with the company’s online network before even being able to use the console.

Lizard Squad has posted a few comments on their Twitter account about the hack - even as far back as August when they essentially promised an attack on Christmas Day. According to an encrypted online conversation posted on the website WinBeta, the group hacked the networks “just for laughs.” However, they later commented that they were trying to show how vulnerable the companies were. Going on to say they were “forcing the companies upgrade their security as a result.”

The reason they decided to stop the attacks - which they described as a “distributed denial of service attack” on the companies - was due to a response from Kim Dotcom, a New-Zealand based entrepreneur. Dotcom runs an encryption and secure data storage service he calls MegaPrivacy. He offered Lizard Squad vouchers for his service (valued at $99 each) if they ceased the attacks. No further comments have been seen.

Google & Microsoft Urge the FCC to Deny WiFi Blocking Plan to Marriott Hotels

Back in October, the FCC had fined Marriott Hotels for deliberately blocking customers’ personal WiFi hotspots. Now, the company is actually requesting permission from the government to do the same thing they were previously doing illegally. In August, Marriott, along with their business partner Ryman Hospitality Properties and trade group the American Hotel and Lodging Association, sent a petition to the FCC. In the petition, they asked them to “declare that the operator of a Wi-Fi network does not violate U.S. law by using FCC-authorized equipment to monitor and mitigate threats to the security and reliability of its network,” even when taking action causes interference to mobile devices.

Prior to this past Friday, the FCC had opened the hotel’s petition up for the public to comment on. It’s no surprise, that tech giants like Google, Microsoft and CTIA all urged against the FCC approving their petition. However, due mainly to security and privacy reasons, Marriott feels that some hotspot blocking is justified as long as they aren’t using illegal equipment like signal jammers.

As of now, the FCC is still in the process of making a decision on the matter.

Simply works. I need a seamless internet connection for my business and this router does the job for me. I had hard time to configure properly with my old dual wan router, but this peplink is really easy to understand and setup. If you need a reliable dual WAN router, this is it. One thing i don't like is that all the ethernet and WAN ports are located on the front face. not easy to manage all the thernet cable neat. Overall, i give 4 / 5 on the router.

Sierra Wireless DMZ

The DMZ is used to direct unsolicited inbound traffic to a specific LAN device such as a computer running a web server or other internal application. The DMZ with public mode is particularly useful for certain services like VPN, NetMeeting, and streaming video where the remote server may require a WAN connection to the LAN device rather than being NAT by the router. In public mode unsolicited traffic to hosts in the DMZ is permitted by default.

Peplink InControl 2 Required Firewall Updates

Peplink's InControl 2 is an online, cloud based, management utility for Peplink routers and access points. InControl lets individual users or IT departments easily manage their Peplink deployments from a single user interface. InControl lets users push firmware and configuration updates, update access points, manage and track bandwidth across multiple sites, and perform fleet management on GPS enable devices.

Today Peplink has announced their InControl platform will be expanding with a new range of IP addresses. These IP's are how Peplink routers and access points can talk to InControl for updates and remote management. If you are using a Peplink as a standalone router with no firewall, there is nothing you have to do. However, if you are using your Peplink with an active firewall or behind another firewall, you must allow the following IP addresses and ports through.

Existing server IP addresses:
  • 54.213.17.185
  • 54.218.62.163
Additional server IP addresses:
  • 54.201.63.99
  • 54.69.133.25
  • 54.174.153.41
  • 54.174.232.241
  • 54.169.188.216
  • 54.169.190.249
Outgoing ports:
  • UDP port 5246
  • TCP port 443

The people at 3G are awesome. I had trouble setting up the device for an unusual application. A quick call to customer support and they had the device up and running, doing what I needed it to do, in no time at all. I will definitely buy from them again.

Verizon Will Support 3G until 2019

Yesterday, we posted news that Verizon was starting to kill off their 3G networks. This comes 4 years after 4G was initially launched. According to Verizon’s vice president of network operations, Mike Haberman, they are using the PCS bands and repurposing them for their third LTE network. It will be deployed it in 10 markets to start.

“In Manhattan, PCS is up with LTE. It puts us in even a better situation, because you’ve got another 10×10 block out there right now,” Haberman said. Unfortunately Haberman didn’t say what other cities are included in this upgrade, but so far it has also been discovered in Manhattan and Cleveland, Ohio.

The change comes mainly because of the decreased usage on the 3G network. Most customers are upgrading to new devices that support 4G and, let’s face it, 3G will eventually become unused anyway. In fact, most manufacturers like Apple are only making 4G devices now.

For those of you still stuck with 3G as your only option - don’t be too discouraged. Verizon knows this and certainly won’t shut it down completely just yet. Haberman said they are committed to support 3G EV-DO until at least December 31, 2019.

FedEx Crashes Under Cyber Monday Load

FedEx Webservices API has been crashing under heavy Cyber Monday traffic - knocking out many ecommerce web sites on the busiest online sales day of the year.  3Gstore noticed customers complaints around 1pm CST and we confirmed the issue.  FedEx normally takes 5 seconds or so to return the shipping rates to display to the online shopper while they are checking out.  Those times jumped to 8 minutes or more - causing many shoppers to abort.  Luckily at 3Gstore, we use both FedEx and UPS.  UPS didn't have the problem - so instead of displaying both rates, we are now only displaying UPS rates - so we don't disappoint our customers (and lose sales).

Shop Small with 3Gstore.com on Small Business Saturday

On Nov. 27th, 2010 American Express founded Small Business Saturday. It was a way for them to help small businesses, like ourselves, to get the word out and encourage all the holiday shoppers to support their local shops. In 2011, the day became official and has since become a national event, taking place on the first Saturday after Thanksgiving each year.

According to American Express, there was an estimated $5.5 billion spent on the 3rd annual small business Saturday in 2012. Since 2013, they began urging Small Businesses to rally other small businesses in their neighborhood to join the movement. Over 1,450 small businesses joined the rally just that year.

3Gstore is proud to be a small business, but our customers certainly don’t make us feel small. We’ve assisted both small and large businesses alike in finding the best mobile broadband solutions and equipment for them. We’re here for you AND because of you. So, we’d like to thank all of you for supporting us, and other small businesses!

FCC makes T-Mobile make throttling practices more clear

tmobile_logo2.jpg
Recently the FCC made an announcement that requires T-Mobile make throttling practices more clear. As of right now T-Mobile doesn’t have any overage charges like Verizon, AT&T or Sprint, but throttles users all the way down to 64/128Kbps for the remainder of the billing cycle if they hit their usage limit. Until now it was difficult for T-Mobile customers to know what the reduced speed looked like because T-Mobile exempted popular speedtest sites from getting throttled like traditional websites or video services like YouTube. With the next 60 days T-Mobile must do the following to make their throttling practices more visible to customers:
  • Send customers a text message once they hit their monthly high-speed data allotment linking to a speed test that customers can use to determine their actual reduced speed;
  • Provide a button on customer smartphones linking to a speed test that will show actual reduced speeds;
  • Modify the text messages it currently sends to customers once they hit their monthly high-speed data allotment to make it clear that certain speed tests may show network speeds, rather than their reduced speed. The modified texts also will provide more information about the speeds that will be available after customers exceed their data cap; and
  • Modify its website disclosures to better explain T-Mobile’s policies regarding speed test
  • applications and where consumers can get accurate speed information.

Windows/Mac Static IP Address Tip Sheet

The router you are using might require a static IP address instead of a dynamic IP address, using Static IPs prevents address conflicts between devices and allows you to manage them more easily. Plug one end of the Ethernet cable into your computers Ethernet port. Plug the opposite end of the Ethernet cable into to the Ethernet port located on the back of the Pepwave, Cradlepoint, Device Connector.

T-Mobile network ranks # 1 in Boston

tmobile_logo2.jpg
Bellevue, Washington – November 20, 2014 – On the heels of recent LTE upgrades in Philadelphia and Connecticut, T-Mobile (NYSE: TMUS) today announced that Wideband LTE has landed in Boston, MA. Already the fastest, T-Mobile has made mobile speeds even faster around Beantown by upgrading its LTE network to Wideband LTE, bringing up to a 50% increase in mobile speeds to LTE customers. In addition to Boston, customers in surrounding areas – including Springfield, Worcester as well as Providence and Warwick, RI – are all experiencing super-fast download speeds, making access to their favorite content seem almost instantaneous. Already in November, T-Mobile customers in the greater Boston area have observed download speeds as high as 94 Mbps.

Wideband LTE doubles the bandwidth and increases the capacity of T-Mobile’s LTE network to help deliver faster peak speeds. It is like adding more lanes to a freeway for all LTE customers to speed along in. With T-Mobile’s Wideband LTE, customers can download a full 90 minute HD movie to their phone or tablet in three and half minutes or a whole album in just nine seconds with theoretical peak download speeds of 110 Mbps.

With the average download speed in the Boston area clocking in at 24.1 Mbps, T-Mobile customers are seeing speeds faster than AT&T, one and a half times faster than Verizon and two and half times faster than Sprint.

“Our T-Mobile customers in Boston are going to love the speed boost that Wideband LTE is bringing to their lives,” said Tom Ellefson, Vice President – Engineering, T-Mobile. “Whether posting to Instagram at a Celtics game, downloading the latest movie, checking in to Boston Harbor on Facebook or online shopping, every one of our T-Mobile LTE customers can immediately take advantage of this network upgrade on their mobile device or tablet.”
Boston is just the latest area to get a speed boost, as the Un-carrier™ continues to expand coverage and enhance performance of its 4G LTE network. Wideband LTE has already been rolled out in the following areas:
  • Atlanta, GA
  • Greater Bay Area, CA
  • Birmingham, AL
  • Boise, ID
  • Columbus, OH
  • Connecticut
  • Dallas, TX
  • Detroit, MI
  • Honolulu, HI

Verizon Wireless changes ETF policy

verizon_logo.jpg

Recently Verizon Wireless quietly made some changes to their ETF (Early termination fee) policy that will make it harder to get out of your wireless contract. For the last few years Verizon’s ETF was $350 and went down $10 each month you completed within your two year contract. Verizon is no longer pro-rating the first 8 months of your 2/yr contract, so if you want to switch to a new carrier 6 months in you’ll need to pay the full $350 instead of getting a $60 reduction for the 6 months you’ve completed of your 2 year contract. Only users that have signed a 2/yr agreement with Verizon after November 14th, 2014 will be impacted by the new ETF change. Existing customers under a 2/yr agreement that signed before 11/14 will still have a pro-rated ETF in the event they decide to switch wireless providers.

Robert Kim Scammer Called Out in South Korea

Verizon Offers Pre-Black Friday FREEBIES on "Connection Day" (Nov. 26th)

If you’ll be traveling on Thanksgiving Eve this year (Nov. 26th), Verizon’s got a treat for you! They’ll be taking advantage of one of the busiest travel days and giving away lots of free items - and not just for their customers, but EVERYONE! They’ve even deemed the day “Connection Day” and created a special website for it.

How is it that Verizon is doing this? They’re working with several large companies, such as Amazon, Apple, Boingo Wireless, Condé Nast, Gogo Technologies, JetBlue, and Pandora.

Here's a list of what you can get on Nov. 26th*:
  • Download the free FiOS Preview app and get mobile access to popular movies and TV shows (compliments of Verizon FiOS)
  • A Selection of 10 free/discounted apps, plus two free Audible book downloads (new members) or $10 Audible credit (current members) from Amazon.
  • A special iTunes offer from Apple - this won’t be revealed until Nov. 26
  • Free Digital Edition downloads of 17 Condé Nast Publications, including Wired, Vanity Fair and GQ
  • 30-minute complimentary Internet sessions through Boingo Wireless (at airports) and Gogo Technologies (in-flight).
  • Free in-flight Fly-Fi (Wi-Fi) on JetBlue flights between Nov. 26 and Dec. 24.
  • A free seven-day trial of Pandora One.
*For more details, be sure to check out the website they’ve created for this special day! You can even sign up to be notified when they’re available!

Of course, not all the deals are for everyone. Verizon customers who sign up will get an extra 1GB of sharable data immediately applied to your account, plus another 1GB on your next billing cycle.

Ken Dixon, who is the Vice President of Marketing for Verizon Wireless, made the following comments about these offers, "As we approach the holiday season, we wanted to show how much we appreciate our customers. We hope that not only our customers, but everyone, will take advantage of this day — a day to connect with family and friends, to learn something new about their device, or just to provide a little more entertainment during what can often be a hectic kick off to the holiday season."

Surecall FCC-Approved Verizon Direct Connect Amplifier Now Available at 3Gstore

surecall verizon lte amplifier
The first direct connect 4G LTE amplifier since this year's FCC rule changes for amplifiers is here: the Surecall SC-SoloVI-15. The SC-SoloVI-15 has an MSRP of $220 and works on the Verizon 700mhz LTE frequency ONLY (it will not help with Verizon 2G or 3G signal, nor wiill it help with the Verizon AWS "XLTE" frequency, nor will it help with ANY other carriers' networks - an AT&T version is due later this year) and, along with a high-gain LTE antenna, is the best way to improve and stabilize weak LTE signal.

contents
The SC-SoloVI-15 include two 6' cables (one to use if you're connecting to a traditional adapter cable, and one to use if you're connecting to a device with an SMA antenna connector), power supply, mounting kit, and a 6" magnetic mount antenna

The SC-Solo-VI-15 replaces the popular CM700V-32 amplifier, which was discontinued earlier this year when the new FCC regulations went into place. 3Gstore received a small batch of amplifiers last month and were impressed with the results, as were the lucky few customers who were able to purchase from that first batch. Michael from Amherst, NY, shared his thoughts in this review: "+15db gain with this little unit. Tested with a small Wilson directional panel antenna also purchased from 3GSTORE. Tested with/without panel antenna. Gained an additional 15db with the panel antenna on top of the 15db from the amp, excellent compliment. Works ridiculously well and easy!"

Specifications
  • Frequency Range: Uplink: 776-787 Mhz / Downlink: 746-757 Mhz
  • Standards Supported: LTE
  • Gain: 15dB
  • Max Output Power: 1 watt EIRP
  • Impedance: 50ohms
  • Noise Figure: Maximum 5 dB
  • VSWR: Less than 2:1
  • AC Power Transformer: 110VAC,60Hz IN/6V
  • RF Connectors: SMA/Female (SMA to FME adapters included)
  • Power Consumption: <9W
  • Dimensions: 4⅞” x 2¾” x 2”
  • Weight: 1lb 13oz
  • FCC ID: RSNM2M-V
The Surecall Verizon Direct Connect Amplifier is available NOW at 3Gstore!

Peplink Releases New InControl 2 Version

Peplink has released a new version of their cloud based device management tool, InControl 2. InControl gives you a way to remotely manage multiple routers all in one place. You’ll have access to such things as advanced administration tools, configuration settings, and reports. This new version is 2.0.21.4.

Here’s what’s included in the changes:
  • VLAN ID setting support* for SSIDs now available for the Peplink Balance, and MAX models
  • Device names defined on InControl 2 are now pushed to devices as their Router/AP Name
  • Users can choose which types of events to receive email notifications on.
  • Wi-Fi/Device Reports can now be downloaded as a CSV file.
  • Location tracking data can now be downloaded as a GPX file.
  • Implemented various UX tweaks, fixed various bugs.

*This will only work if the VLAN ID set within an InControl-configured SSID is one of the VLAN IDs set in the local device Web Admin LAN settings. For example, if the InControl SSID VLAN ID is set to 25, then 25 needs to be among the VLAN IDs set in the local device.

Create your own InControl 2 account and start managing your devices today!

FTC Sues AT&T for Misleading Customers

The FTC (U.S. Federal Trade Commission) announced today that it is suing AT&T for misleading millions of their smartphone customers. Apparently, customers who have paid for unlimited data plans are being throttled, even though this was NOT disclosed in the information AT&T provided to them. Reports show that in some cases, speeds have dropped almost 90%.

The charges filed in the lawsuit were put forth with the assistance of the FCC, which technically has jurisdiction over the mobile provider. The FTC states that the company had performed a "deceptive failure" to disclose its mobile throttling plan. An additional comment from FTC chairwoman Edith Ramirez sums up their view on the issue: "Unlimited means unlimited. AT&T promised its customers 'unlimited' data, and in many instances, it has failed to deliver on that promise."

It was found that AT&T began throttling data in 2011 after customers used 2GB of data - an amount most of us can go through quite quickly. In fact, the FTC claims that about 3.5 million individual customers may have been throttled more than two-dozen times.

After learning of the news, AT&T general counsel Wayne Watts made the following comments:

“The FTC’s allegations are baseless and have nothing to do with the substance of our network management program. It’s baffling as to why the FTC would choose to take this action against a company that, like all major wireless providers, manages its network resources to provide the best possible service to all customers, and does it in a way that is fully transparent and consistent with the law and our contracts. It's the second time this month the company has been bitten by the federal government. Earlier in October, AT&T was forced to pay $80 million back to consumers after it billed customers for unauthorized third-party charges. The FTC claimed the company billed for "hundreds of millions of dollars in charges originated by other companies," usually in amounts of about $10, for subscriptions to ringtones and other text message-based content. AT&T was said to have kept at least 35 percent of the charges it billed to its customers in a practice known as "mobile cramming."
