Apple's iCloud Service Hacked

Soon after iCloud users in Australia reported their devices were locked, with a message asking for money, more reports have come in from users in New Zealand, Canada, and the US. Apple finally acknowledged the situation and responded with the following statement:

"Apple takes security very seriously and iCloud was not compromised during this incident. Impacted users should change their Apple ID password as soon as possible and avoid using the same user name and password for multiple services. Any users who need additional help can contact AppleCare or visit their local Apple Retail Store."

The message Australian users were sent (no matter the iCloud device) appeared to have originated from Apple's find my device service. It stated "Device hacked by Oleg Pliss" along with instruction for the user to send $100 if they wanted to unlock the device.

The root cause of this attack has not been determined yet, but with the Apple support community thread that’s open, many users are joining together to help investigate. Hopefully, this will get Apple closer to finding common factors to crack down on the attacker(s).

Option CloudGate 3G/4G LTE coming June 2014

cloudgate_back.jpg

Last year Option released the CloudGate and it has become a highly versatile M2M gateway with the flexibility to quickly switch between all major U.S. and international carriers. The concept was simple, design a rugged cross carrier device that was expandable with module inserts to fit specific company requirements like RS-232 serial support, WiFi, additional Ethernet LAN ports etc. This decision allowed the CloudGate to come in at a highly aggressive price point while allowing flexibility if your company happened to need WiFi or something else not found on the baseline unit. The only major complaint we got with the CloudGate from customers was the the lack of 4G LTE support.

Option has listened to customer suggestions and is now releasing a CloudGate 4G LTE available in the mid part of June 2014. Just like the 2G/3G version this unit will feature a universal chipset allowing you to run 4G LTE on all major carriers support band 4/13/17 LTE. In addition to LTE support the 4G version of the CloudGate will also support 800-850/900/1900/2100Mhz and AWS (1700/2100Mhz bands 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8). This will take the guess work out for a lot of companies doing both U.S. and international deployments that want one reliable easy to use cellular gateway to handle connectivity for all their M2M needs. There is not a specific shipping date yet, but be sure to sign up and get notified when the Option CloudGate 4G arrives here - Contact Me When the Option CloudGate 4G LTE is available

I just wanted to thank everyone involved in this order in getting me a replacement Cradlepoint 1400 Router, Pre-programmed perfectly, and ready to role in less than 30 minutes from start to finish. It may not mean much to a home user, but every minute my e mail is down is costing me big money. I am seriously considering buying another Cradlepoint 1400 as a backup unit. Absolutely everything runs faster and more reliably.

Sierra Wireless Product Comparison

Sierra_Product_Matrix.jpg

Sierra Wireless have a variety of different embedded router solutions available. This can sometimes make it difficult to figure out which model makes the most sense for your company. The product matrix above is an excellent guide to help figure out which model you should be looking at based on your needs. The majority of Sierra Wireless products come with either a 3/yr or 5/yr warranty giving them an edge over other companies that opt to include a standard 1/yr manufacturer warranty.

The most popular Sierra Wireless devices are the newer GX440 and ES440 units. These units offer 2G/3G support and add 4G LTE support for the latest LTE networks. These are typically placed in harsh environments where businesses need to rely on stable 24/7 Internet connectivity and can’t afford to have a device burn out on them. Both models also offer RS-232 connections making them ideal to pair up to any device serial port to get remote diagnostics or control equipment. Great product. Allowed me to insert an activated ATT SIM card and had 4G wireless installed in our coach within minutes. We needed an outside connection to internet without having to switch networks to a separate hotspot. This guy did the trick. Way more expensive than a traditional router, but reasonably priced for what it allows you to do.

Verizon AWS LTE to be branded XLTE

xlte_image.jpg

Late last year Verizon started to launch AWS (1700/2100) 4G LTE in congested markets to help offload usage from their 700Mhz LTE bands. Users with compatible devices were reporting upwards of 80Mbps down and 15Mbps up because not many devices are capable of running on AWS bands yet. Recently Droid Life reported that Verizon will take their AWS network public on May 19th and brand the service as “XLTE”. The first phones planned to support XLTE are the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the HTC One (M8). Both of these phones will receive an OTA (Over the Air) update, which will give customers access to XLTE. The rebranded service may seem faster than standard 4G LTE, but after all devices also support XLTE you’ll see speeds average out to standard LTE data rates around 5-12Mbps down and 2-5Mbps up.

AT&T VoLTE launches May 23 in select areas

att_logo.gif

AT&T recently confirmed that the company is very close to launch their VoLTE (Voice over LTE) service. This will give customers higher audio quality voice in locations where AT&T plans to start rolling out VoLTE. The official AT&T announcement said VoLTE will launch on May 23 in select areas in Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota and Wisconsin and will continue to expand on a market-by-market basis. The only problem with the launch is the only handset that currently supports VoLTE is the Galaxy S4 Mini with more devices to eventually hit the marketplace. Within their original plans they wanted to launch VoLTE, but faced some issues that pushed the official launch back until 2014.

GlobaTrac’s Trakdot Luggage Tracker Wins 2014 Silver Edison Award

trakdot

The Trakdot Luggage Tracker has received the silver award at the 2014 Edison Awards. We are not surprised, given the simplicity and usefullness of the Trakdot! The Trakdot allows you to track your luggage while traveling and confirm when and where it has landed - simply place the Trakdot into your luggage before you check it, and upon landing you’ll receive a text message stating the location of your checked bag. Trakdot knows the longitude and latitude of every airport and sends a personalized message with the name of the airport (e.g. “Mike’s Luggage landed at Chicago O'hare”), and the signal meter in the free app for Android and iOS alerts you as you get closer and closer to your bag.

Below is the press release from Globatrac regarding the award:

San Francisco – May 7, 2014 – GlobaTrac, LLC , an innovator in low-cost tracking solutions, proudly announces that the Trakdot has received the silver award in the renowned 2014 Edison Awards in the category of Security and Safety.

Being accredited with an Edison Award is one of the highest honors a company can receive in the name of innovation and business. The renowned awards – inspired by Thomas Edison’s determination and ingenuity – recognize innovation and creativity in the international marketplace. Nominees are judged by a panel of more than 3,000 leading business executives including past award winners and academics from several industries and disciplines.

“After having put so much hard work into the development of the Trakdot, it is truly a tremendous honor for us to receive this award,” said Harry Steck, CEO of GlobaTrac. “The Edison Award win further confirms Trakdot as the most effective technology in the market for travelers that to keep track of their checked luggage,” added Steck.

Launched at the Consumer Electronics Show last year, the palm-sized Trakdot Luggage device was an immediate sensation.  Trakdot helps travelers and airlines quickly resolve the problem of misdirected luggage, particularly in situations where late check-ins may cause luggage to miss a flight. The Trakdot luggage tracking device can be placed in any checked bag and will alert the user by reporting airport location in real time to any cellular telephone via text or e-mail.

After traveling in "airplane mode" in flight, upon landing, the luggage locator system automatically transmits airport-specific information on the whereabouts of checked baggage.   Even if the Trakdot-protected bag does not reach the desired destination, passengers will still have the assurance of knowing the location of the luggage.

The Trakdot is available for $89.99 MSRP (just $79.99 at 3Gstore) which includes the activation fee and 1st year annual service fee.

AT&T set to possibly launch VoLTE on May 23

att_logo.gif

The biggest thing on both AT&T and Verizon’s 2014 roadmap are to officially launch VoLTE (Voice over LTE). During testing there were setbacks after VoLTE tests rapidly drained battery delaying voice over LTE’s launch. Now that the battery issues are resolved VoLTE may make it’s debut on May 23, according to sources at Engadget. It has not been disclosed on which devices will be able to take advantage of VoLTE, but it should be possible for most 4G enabled smartphones to use VoLTE with an OTA (Over the air) update. The only comment AT&T has made on the news is "We're wrapping up our initial VoLTE market trials and our initial markets will be VoLTE ready this year”. When VoLTE finally debuts the voice quality should be better than current 3G calls due to improved latency and fallback where LTE service isn’t available.

New FCC Rules for Wireless Amplifiers Now In Effect (5/1/14)

fcc logo

The FCC adopted new requirements for cellular amplifiers back in 2013, but the requirements did not fully go into effect until May 1, 2014. As of today, all cellular amplifiers sold must comply with the new rules and the older models can no longer be sold. All amplifiers currently sold by 3Gstore are FCC-approved and meet the new rules, which include:
  • Amplifiers must be sold in complete kits that include cabling and antennas
  • Amplifiers must be designed to limit interference and automatically shut down when necessary
  • The packaging must include a label like the below example:
fcc amplifier warning label

Additionally, users must register their amplifiers with their cellular provider. This does not cost anything and all of the major carriers in the US (including Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, US Cellular, and over 80 regional providers) have given blanket consent for all of the new FCC-approved amplifiers as long as they are registered with them. Below are the direct links to register amplifiers with some of the carriers:
If you purchased an amplifier before May 1, 2014, and it does not meet the new requirements, YOU DO NOT NEED TO WORRY! All amplifiers purchased prior to 5/1/14 are grandfathered in and you may continue to use your amplifier. However, if the FCC or your service provider determines that your amplifier is interfering with the wireless network in any way and asks you to stop using it, you must comply (or adjust your installation so that it is no longer causing interference).

T-Mobile closes 2.4 billion wireless spectrum deal with Verizon

tmobile_logo2.jpg

T-Mobile has been working for the last several months on closing a deal with Verizon for additional wireless spectrum. They have finally closed the deal with Verizon to purchase part of their unused 700Mhz Spectrum to help boost coverage in areas that currently only support 2G access. In the past T-Mobile has been known as an urban carrier because their 1700/2100Mhz frequency requires too many towers in rural areas to provide robust coverage. Now that they have 700Mhz spectrum they can start launching 4G speeds in rural areas without deploying a ton of cell towers. T-Mobile plans to have their network completely upgraded to 4G LTE by the mid part of 2015, but customers should notice improvements by the end of this year.
